November - RIP Eva Kipler

We lost one of our own this week.  Normally I don't try and censor, and probably never will again.  All I ask is that you be respectful when talking about Eva, and to each other when discussing her. We all deal with loss in our own way.

I will not delete or remove posts that don't follow what I've asked.  I just hope that you can show her the respect that she deserves.

RIP Eva Kipler.

I know one designer who must be so happy with Art Journaling becoming more popular : OTBDS aka COLS.

Anonymous said...

lol...at least OTBDS took herself out of the mainstream to start her own - - academy? What a joke.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, what/who is OTBDS and COLS? Thanks!

I've never heard of OTBDS, so was she doing art journaling before it was popular?

#3 Is there a story behind this designer? I'm new to digi and I'm not too sure what you are referring to?

Anonymous said...

The story is her stuff is weird. And some say poor quality, though I have never bought it so I cant speak to that.

Anonymous said...

#6 - no, she wasn't. Tangie Baxter, Sherrie JD, Holliewood Studios, and a few others, were doing art journaling before it was popular.

I have downloaded some of her freebies (OTBDS) just to check it out and it was very jaggy/pixelated/blurry. I could never use it.

Anonymous said...

#9 - oh no, it's not jaggy, pixelated and blurry, it's arty! At least, according to her it is.

She (amanda kuykendall, aka OTBDS) started out as a 'regular' designer. Her stuff was awful, full of strays, jaggies. She claimed it was "artistic" impression, and that she would not be ruled by strict guidelines. Jumped from one store to another - always full of attitude. Now she started her own "campus" so she can teach others how to be artistic. I guess that if you can't follow the industry standards, then you simply claim that its "artistic" and go your own way, even if its still nasty stuff. She was no where near the first "art journalers". It was her last resort to peddling her crap.

I knew it!!! I guessed it on Black Friday, so TLP didn't have a Black Friday sale but all of a sudden they have a 20% off flash sale on all kits today.
Ok...maybe sales didn't go so well after all.
I don't consider 20% a sale.

Anonymous said...

#12 I don't either, and the $1.50 thing from Michelle G. Yesterday was iffy. I would rather pay full price for something than see a 20% flash sale. They should just stick to their SOSN sale. Did you see that SSD's bargain bites are 50% off this month?

Anonymous said...

I'd rather have 20% off than nothing. Some people.

Anonymous said...

Well #14 I'm not in a hurry to buy them. I'd rather have a 35-40% sale or I'm not buying anything. I can wait.
Yes I saw SSD 50% Bargain Bites and I loved it!! Good for them!

If you bought from a store and they sent you a store coupon as thanks, would you consider that spam?

Anonymous said...

No! I think it's a nice gesture. I've done it for my customers and I would hope that they would appreciate it.

I think SPAM is defined as "bulk" and "unsolicited" email, however it is also a matter of defining "unsolicited". Is it "unwanted"? or "unexpected"? If you define it as "never specifically asked for" then a coupon sent might be considered spam, but the same might be said of a birthday email you get from a store with a gift. Same goes with defining "bulk". If you get a thank you note with your name, and a mention of your specific purchase, is it bulk?
I am sure some people will consider spam just about anything. Heck, I have seen people subscribe to a newsletter and instead of unsubscribing, mark it as spam. Well, they did subscribe in the first place (whether they remember or not, or whether they will admit it or not).
My way around it is to ask myself "Would I be annoyed at getting this unexpected email?" If the answer is yes, then it is probably going to be considered spam. If not, maybe one or two will consider it spam, while the majority might just ignore it if it does not appeal to them.

Anonymous said...

My first reaction would be- Thanks! Even if I'm not going to use the coupon, its a nice thought. And they dont HAVE to give me anything. But some people will be bitchy no matter what.

Anonymous said...

I would think of it as a nice gesture, even if I wasn't going to use it. It's easy to hit the delete button if you don't want it.

Would I consider it spam? No, not if after a purchase I received it, however if I was suddenly inundate with emails crom this store I may think differently and asked to be removed fro list (unsubscribe if option).

#20 here, sorry about the typos. I'm on my tablet and guess I didn't touch hard enough, lol.

I have received coupons after purchases and always think it's so nice and thoughtful. I never thought it spam.

OK, Daily Digi: I get it. You now have some stupid app for Disney. I don't care. I hate Disney. But I love TDF and TDD. So maybe you could stop including Disney and "Capturing Magic" crap in your TDD emails...since I signed up for TDD newsletter, not the Capturing Crap newsletter. A "Daily Digi" newsletter with the subject "A Major Announcement" makes me think that the DAILY DIGI has an announcement. Your hyperbole annoys me. You've included Capturing crap in your newsletter all the time lately. I get it: You're excited about it. Guess what? Not everyone is in love with the mouse and all the greedy, materialistic bullshit he represents, so keep him out of my inbox. Or at least have DAILY DIGI news in your TDD newsletter and a small, barely noticeable, link to your new blog at the bottom. But don't send me "news" in your TDD newsletter that isn't actually news about TDD.

#23 I totally agree.

By the way did anyone buy the Scrapstacks November edition? Are they worth it? I have some extra money on my credit card and I'm thinking of buying it today as the last day of November. I had totally forgotten about it.

I thought the same thing about the email from The Daily Digi- and I got no just one email, but TWO! Thanks so much!

Mscraps just totally copied Scrap Orchards Advent Daily Download idea. Crazy!

26. I don't think that's really an original idea. I'm sure others have done it. Advent? Countdown to Christmas?

Anonymous said...

Daily download advent calendars were around in digi before SO was even a store.

Anonymous said...

Mscraps copied the idea and the layout of the daily download.

Ok I bought the November Scrap Stacks Pack and TLP doesn't include a preview of the kit. I hate when that happens. I've been googling it but no luck. I only found a very small preview on the scrap stacks blog.

Anonymous said...

#30 There is a preview here
http://www.the-lilypad.com/forums/showthread.php?20542-preview-for-TLP-s-Scrap-Stacks-kit&highlight=scrap+stacks

you can copy and save it to your files.

Anonymous said...

#29 - I'll give you the layout, not that I know what the SO one looks like, but not the idea. the idea has been around for a long time. If MS copied the idea, then so did SO.

If you bought from a store and they sent you a store coupon as thanks, would you consider that spam?

------

I send thank freebies, gifts, and coupons to customers all the time and I've never had anyone complain. I've had a lot of them thank me though. Yes, I want to build my business, but I also want my customers to know that I value them for more reasons than just the money they spend in my store. However, I assume there are plenty of people out there that will bitch and moan about emails like that though because they are negative people in general and would rather find a reason to bitch than to be grateful. It's sad, but I consider it their loss because I take good care of my customers.

#23 Another agreement here.
