June 2013

Nipplegate.  Are you for, against, or don't care about seeing a woman's nipples on a layout.

I haven't seen anywhere but here that DHD is closing. I wouldn't doubt it though. The desginers that are left aren't that great.

Anonymous said...

Personally, I like the layout.

Anonymous said...

I can't understand why people just stay away from Sweet Shop if you hate everything that goes on there. I just avoid sites I don't like.

Anonymous said...

oh wow! you're suppose to scraplift that first layout? uh, why? who would want a layout like that?

The first layout has overdone shadows, but isn't that bad except for the pictures and the wordart don't go together. "be Some one who makes you happy" "believe in you" "it all starts with you" and 3 pics of a baby in which 2 of them it is hard to tell if the baby is yawning or yelling or pooping!

Anonymous said...

199, thanks for voicing my thoughts exactly. Those shadows make my head spin, and I can't wrap my mind around the idea that this girl is on those CTs.

Anonymous said...

Happy To Create is the store that is closing. It's on their Facebook Page.

Anonymous said...

Never heard of it

Anonymous said...

3 - Then why don't you avoid this site since you don't like what's being said here?

6 - I'm surprised it's survived this long based on a quick look at their products and prices. They look like they were made in 2006. Sad and overpriced.

Anonymous said...

6-I'll probably not miss that site. Never saw it before! Good luck to those that are there.

Anonymous said...

I heard DHD is closing, too.

Anonymous said...

What designer "seems" popular but their designs totally annoy you? For me it's JenC. I don't get how she gets into some of the stores she does, and my gosh.. she hops so much.

Sooo..the layout isn't bad except for the shadows, the word art and the pictures? Give me a break, the whole thing is a MESS! Those baby pics could have been scrapped in a really cute way with applicable word art and embellishments creating an outstanding page.

Just because I don't like this page or that and maybe dislike certain posts doesn't mean I hate the site. This is a smack blog. If you don't like what is posted here, maybe you should avoid it.

This made me laugh because I just deleted a bunch of stuff from a few years ago because it looks so outdated. It's amazing how far this industry has come, designing-wise.

Me too. But perhaps they stay because their lives would be meaningless without the constant hating on SSD.

Yes, it is a smack blog but not the SSD smack blog. Saying we should avoid the blog because we don't like the constant posting about SSD is ridiculous. It's not relevant.

I honestly haven't seen much change at all in the last three years, designing wise. The only thing that has changed are the trends but design wise? Mmy stuff from three/four years ago looks pretty much the same as the stuff from a few months back.

Hmmm..we must not shop in the same places. I see a vast difference in kits I bought four years ago compared to today and it's for the better.

Well it is relevant. If you're unhappy reading posts of any kind here, you should move on for your own peace of mind. Trying to get people to not post stuff you don't like is futile and simply not your place. Most of us, I assume, have the ability to just move on from posts we dislike or of which we don't care about the content. There's "Royanna" and "Charlie" posts on here all the time. I know neither of these people and couldn't care less what's going on with or about them so when I see the post is about one of them, I simply skip it.

Anonymous said...

I don't hate SSD. I do hate some of the work some of their "prize scrappers" do (Laura and Trish especially come to mind). I also think some of their designers are average at best.

Anonymous said...

What designer "seems" popular but their designs totally annoy you?

Studio Basic at SSD just sucks imo.

Anonymous said...

11-Twin Mom Scraps. I just don't like it at all.

Yes, it is a smack blog but not the SSD smack blog.

MAYBE WE SHOULD START ONE!

Anonymous said...

#12, I said "isn't that bad" not isn't bad as you quote me. It's still better that the one that's being scraplifted. Better is a relative term. You can be better that something that is very bad and still be bad.

Anonymous said...

Okay, I think it is that bad. I think it's worse than the scraplifted one by far, and, I think the scraplifted one is pretty bad.

Anonymous said...

#26, I think I can fix the baby one with different pics, different (less) shadows, move some stuff around and it could be half way decent (not claiming I could work miracles though). The original one, got no idea how to even start fixing it! Delete button!

Anonymous said...

#11 Jennifer Barrette, Traci Reed, and Studio Basic.

Bella Gypsy

Anonymous said...

------

Nothing wrong with the original. It's not my cup of tea, but there's nothing wrong with it. Okay, perhaps it's overly colorful, woop-de-doo.

Anonymous said...

I like a lot of color, but that hurts the eyes! It's more the patterns and all the stuff. It's like she tried to use every element in the kit. It runs together.

Anonymous said...

I see that the Digital Scrapbook Artisan Guild site is also closing at the end of June with owner, Debb Cozzi, just continuing to sell at PBP after that date.

Anonymous said...

What designer "seems" popular but their designs totally annoy you?
----------------------

Bella Gypsy and Meagan's Creations.

Anonymous said...

Happy to Create was a store created when a bunch of designers bolted from Scrap Girls. Don't remember why they left though. If you look at the previews of the products offered in Happy to Created, they're previewed similarly to those at Scrap Girls.

Anonymous said...

I don't know that she is popular, but I hate that Kathryn Estry's products are at Gotta Pixel and ScrapbookBytes! Her stuff is hideous, I can't believe she isn't smacked more on here!

Anonymous said...

Meagan's Creations

I love her templates.

Well, I'd never heard of her until your post. I went to her blog and yes, you're right. Her stuff is AWFUL!

Anonymous said...

#11: She's not a designer, but I think Rachael's Scraps stuff has become overrated. The stuff she's put out the past few months hasn't been of the highest quality and you can tell that even by looking at her 100% previews (blurry). It's too bad because she used to put out some really great, high-quality stuff.

#37: I agree. Love her templates. Her kits? Meh.

Anonymous said...

I get what you're saying about Studio Basic- her designs can be extremely intimidating. But have you ever worked with one? I LOVE her kits because she stretches me. And, while I haven't used a lot of her kits, the layouts I've created with them I have absolutely LOVED. It's a style preference for sure... just like any other kit out there. :)

five products to make that? Designers and customers, what do you think when you see stuff like that?

Anonymous said...

I don't get the fascination with that scrapper AT ALL! She's horrible and she's so far up Heather and Laura's ass it's disgusting. She's Traci's newest ass wart, too.

Anonymous said...

I think did she get paid for that spam?

Anonymous said...

LOL @ Traci's ass wart.

Anonymous said...

Heather is worse about downloading 20 products for one page.

Anonymous said...

As a customer, I buy kits more than anything else. I look at that page and think none of those products will work for what I need. I don't want to mix and match and prefer a kit to have everything I need already made so I can just scrap. I don't want to buy 5 products to make one page. Packs like those labels and stickers will get lost on my hard drive and never used, but one or two of those things in a kit would be used.

All that page tells me is none of those products are useful on their own.

Anonymous said...

42-I too love working with Studio Basic kits. I don't have many either, but the layouts I've done with them are some of my favorites.

Anonymous said...

All that page tells me is none of those products are useful on their own.

----

And that someone wanted to satisfy multiple CT obligations with one page.

Anonymous said...

I don't get why y'all hate Dalis so much. I think she's incredible. Sure she'll have a layout every now and then that I don't personally like, but I think she's extremely creative and isn't like those cookie-cutter CT'ers you always see. And where do you see her up anyone's ass? I haven't seen much of her ever - until Laura used one of her layouts for the scraplift challenge...

Anonymous said...

LOL you must not have ever been around a forum when they were having a CT call. You'd see 50x more of her than you ever wanted.

Anonymous said...

I get what you're saying about Studio Basic- her designs can be extremely intimidating.
-
Her work is not intimidating to me, it's AWFUL. I absolutely would not pay for one thing I've seen so far. I also dislike the layouts done by people with her stuff. It's a matter of taste, I guess and her designs are not mine.

Anonymous said...

I don't get why y'all hate Dalis so much.
--
Agree. There's worse scrappers like Trish and Laura for sure. They both are terrible which is cool BUT they both appear to think they're really talented! That's not cool; it's annoying.

Anonymous said...

--
I've NEVER seen her post to anyone where she's "up someone's ass."

five products to make that? Designers and customers, what do you think when you see stuff like that?
--------

Um, that's fairly typical for me. I wouldn't do it as a CTM, but for my personal pages, absolutely.

Is it annoying you because it's a CTM page or what?

Anonymous said...

I don't want to mix and match and prefer a kit to have everything I need already made so I can just scrap.
------

Now see, I prefer being able to mix and match. Kits that are too themey and/or matchy-matchy annoy the heck out of me. Sure, have the kit be cohesive, but it doesn't have to be matchy-matchy like mother/daugther outfits.

Anonymous said...

I don't get why y'all hate Dalis so much.

I don't get why you think we all hate her so much. I don't know her from chicken scratch so I can't hate her.

Anonymous said...

------

Someone here just likes to say that. There's only one CTM that seems to be up Trish, Laura or Traci's ass. I'm guessing that someone secretly wishes she was.

Anonymous said...

All that page tells me is none of those products are useful on their own.
-----------

It doesn't tell me that at all. Perception is everything.

Anonymous said...

#59 here, I meant to say - There always seems to be one CTM ....

Too much coffee!

Anonymous said...

That LO has, at this moment, 94 views, far more than any of her others. I guess a lot of people do read here, even if they don't post.

Anonymous said...

Re: multiple products on one page, for me it depends on whether the person is on the site team or on a designer's team. As a designer I want my CTMs to use my products so I can use them for marketing. But If they're on a site CT I think the aim is more to show how multiple items in the store can work together so customers might by more products from additional designers.

Anonymous said...

From a customer's perspective, not a CT or designer, I don't like seeing multiple products on a page like that. It doesn't make me buy more at all and I definitely wont buy a kit if a CT who makes pages all the time, but can't make a decent page with a kit by itself. I can understand if it were a paper pack, some elements, and some journal cards. Of course those would require adding something, but I should be able to scrap a page with a kit and nothing else besides a template.

That page linked above wouldn't make me buy anything.

Anonymous said...

What is a bungie closure anyway? LOL! It must be important if it's layout worthy.

Anonymous said...

That page linked above wouldn't make me buy anything.

Maybe because the subject matter is STUPID?

Anonymous said...

What is a bungie closure anyway? LOL! It must be important if it's layout worthy.

Believe me, it isn't layout worthy. It's bad enough she scrapped a page about it; what's worse is she used umpteen kits to do it.

Anonymous said...

This is okay to a certain extent. Please don't give some of those store ct members ideas to haphazardly throw even more crap on their pages than they already do.

Anonymous said...

Agree. There's worse scrappers like Trish and Laura for sure.
___________
No kidding.

Anonymous said...

Believe me, it isn't layout worthy. It's bad enough she scrapped a page about it;
--------------

Not everyone feels the need to scrap only the important events. Some people like to scrap fun, every day things, for instance, the family liking their Keens and why they liked them. It's a fun memory.

I don't see why it's bad she scrapped it.

Anonymous said...

From a customer's perspective, not a CT or designer, I don't like seeing multiple products on a page like that
-------

From a different customer's perspective, I love it. And that's why there are different kinds of CTMs.

Anonymous said...

You know what's funny? Two kits, out of the five, actually go together, another one is just a template and another one is just a paper pack, so it's not "umpteen" kits, it's not even five full kits.

I love making pages with elements from different kits, and even different designers. A page made with one kit still seems like the designer's page to me, mostly her, a little me.

But when I can mix & match to my own taste, the page is mostly me. And that's why I make pages, to express my-self. Pages from a variety of sources are much more unique, too.

Anonymous said...

I'm sorry, but, I do not, I mean, AT ALL, get Amanda's designs. How is it possible she even has a customer base?!?

Anonymous said...

81 - exactly what I was thinking.

Anonymous said...

It's just like the FB freebie for DSA. She couldn't get a better group of designers together to do a freebie? I'm not interested in downloading that crap. It looks like she's using DSA to try to further her design career and that of her "friends." Well, it's not going to give them more credibility to suddenly have them plastered all over DSA, instead everyone is going to walk away saying DSA is crap now. Can't wait to see OTB in the Fix next.

Anonymous said...

I think OTB is one of their sponsors. She pays 20 bucks a month there, so they have to take her on in these projects and promote her stuff.

Anonymous said...

I thought I read here and on a forum that Tanyia dropped all her CT's for personal/family more important things in life reasons...but now she is making templates as Conceptions by Tanyia? A bit shady in my mind.

Anonymous said...

Well, I would hope that being sponsor doesn't mean that the site is obligated to let that person in on being the Fix, FB Freebies, Blogtrains, etc. I get that the site can't afford to tell people who want to pay them $20 a month no, but for that money they get ad banners, promotion on FB, and special posting priviledges, it doesn't say anything about preferential treatment for other things DSA does. As a designer who has participated in the Fix several times, you can bet I will be watching for awhile to see if there are still any standards in place before signing on for it again. The point of handing over a full kit for DSA to sell is that you will potentially gain customers because people buy the pack and try you out, whether they are customers of the other designers in the pack or whatnot. If people aren't buying because the other designers in the pack put in horrendous kits then it defeats the purpose of me taking the time to give away the profits from a kit. Christine better think long and hard before she lets quality standards slip for the site. There are plenty of other places to advertise by sponsoring and giving product (DST, MSA, Scrap Stacks, TDD). I'm going to spend my money and time with sites where my work is advertised with comparable designers not junk.

Anonymous said...

#88 - Link??

Anonymous said...

I got in Group Therapy (DSA) and I'm not a sponsor. If I would have known OTBS was going to be joining, I would have declined.

I'm assuming that the original poster was also accepted. Since Christine hasn't announced, that's poor taste.

Anonymous said...

It's just like the FB freebie for DSA.

That's OK, she won't be making any money at TDC.

Anonymous said...

Yes, you did miss something. Lauren sold (or gave?) OSD when the site crashed and they lost everything and she couldn't be bothered putting it back up. A lot of designers were left shop less, not that she cared.

Here you go - http://laurenreiddesigns.blogspot.com.au/2013/03/the-road-ahead.html

Anonymous said...

#127 really? Where has Just Jaimee guested in the past few months other than the Lily pad?

Anonymous said...

What's so great about the Lily Pad? I don't even recognize any of the designers
-------

You must be joking. Quite a few of the designers at TLP are veterans of the industry. Most, if not all, have been designing for a minimum of 3 or 4 years.

Anonymous said...

What's the deal with Cropped over at P&Co? There is nothing in the forums at all about it. It starts in a few days and you'd think the designers or at least the CT would be in there generating excitement. Iron Scrapper is stealing your thunder, Gen.

Anonymous said...

127-Just Jaimee was one of the unlucky ones that had just joined 2 peas as a designer when 2 peas decided they were changing directions. You might have called her short stay there a guest spot. She is currently battling some medical problems.

Well, that says something about you, not the Lily Pad. Obviously, you're not very knowledgeable on the subject if you don't recognize ANY of the designers. Most of them have been around a very long time.

Anonymous said...

I think some of you have Lauren Reid confused with Lauren Grier...Lauren Grier is a TLP designer, Lauren Reid owned OSD.

The first activity for Iron Scrapper is to sit in a chat room for an hour and watch two people scrap, but you don't scrap. Anything P&Co does has got to be better than that stupidity.

-
I actually agree with this. Judging digiscrap layouts is sooooo subjective. What some think are wonderfully designed layouts, I think are AWFUL! I'm sure the opposite is true as well. I'm not sure what gives one the ability to be a "qualified" judge in this arena. Just because one designs, doesn't mean she can scrap that well or have an eye for someone who does.

Anonymous said...

The judging comes from looking at basic design principles.

I can pretty much guarantee that most of the layouts people like follow these principles. The subjective part relates to element and color choice, not design principles.

Anonymous said...

139 - I agree with this to a point as well. However, unless Scrap Orchard shows a video of them putting every single name into a bowl then drawing from that bowl on a video, you have no way of knowing if they've eliminated you from winning.

The perception that it's fair boosts sales, but they offer little as far as proof IMO that it's actually the case.

I see this with a lot of sites when they do giveaways. As if random.org can't be used more than once if the first time it draws someone you don't like. I understand it's an act of faith they're being honest and that's fine if it's a free prize, but Iron Scrapper is designed to get you to buy things.

I think some of you have Lauren Reid confused with Lauren Grier...Lauren Grier is a TLP designer, Lauren Reid owned OSD.
------

Nope, I think you are the only one who thinks that. Lauren Grier is leaving TLP and people are speculating as to whether or not she is gong to SBG.

but Iron Scrapper is designed to get you to buy things.
----------

Of course it is. All of those contests are, it's not unique to SO.

The subjective part relates to element and color choice, not design principles.
--
Yeah, you'd like to think that but it's not true at all. In fact, basic design principles for digital scrapbooking are subjective themselves. What I might think is a basic principle, others may not.

Anonymous said...

I can pretty much guarantee that most of the layouts people like follow these principles.
-
Hogwash.

Anonymous said...

I'd leave TLP if my sales weren't great to go to SBG.
-
I wouldn't.

Anonymous said...

No, they aren't. Basic design principles remain the same for all kinds of design, it doesn't change just because it's scrapbooking.

#146 and #147 - you are clearly just trying to be contrary. Good for you. I hope it made your day brighter.

Ten days on and I'm still waiting for someone to explain why SBG is a PITA and so damn hard to navigate. All talk and no examples? Thought so.

Anonymous said...

I would agree with the statement that basic design principles are subjective.

Ditto.

It's been posted before that the site is not difficult, however, it IS tedious and ugly to some. If you disagree, okay. Why so defensive? Did you design it or something?

Not being contrary. Just voicing my opinion. I don't like SBG so I'd NEVER leave TLP for there if I was a designer.

When a statement is made such as "I can pretty much guarantee that most of the layouts people like follow these principles, " it's just plain ludicrous. The author of such a statement has no idea what most people like and it's ridiculous for him or her to say such a thing to bolster his or her argument. Just because it's said doesn't make it true, hence, the word hogwash.

Anonymous said...

So tell me I'd like to know what the basic design principles are since I'm probably one who thinks anything designed doesn't necessarily look one way or another. I like all kinds of design and I'm sure not everyone cottons to your statement.

As a customer, I don't shop at SBG. I can't remember a single item I've ever bought there the whole time I've been in digi in fact. The site looks old and ugly. I shop at TLP frequently. It does make a difference how a site looks! and speaking of ugly, I don't shop at sbe either. That is the ugliest. (imo) I used to shop at 2 peas, but purchase mostly at tdc.

DST Blog Train is up. So which ones are your favorites? I will be able to use the Philadelphia one...

#155 - Basic principles of design:

Balance
Rhythm
Proportion
Dominance
Unity

Anonymous said...

#155: Related concepts:

Contrast or Opposition

Positive and Negative Space

Rule of Thirds

Visual Center

Color and Typography

Anonymous said...

157 - None. Yuck.

Anonymous said...

#157: The only one I like is the template by AK Designs.

Anonymous said...

#158/#159 - Digi Design Resort says differently. Likewise, the Daily Digi says there are six, not five basic principles and they are not the same ones you listed. I could go on but it's for naught, I reckon, since you're trying so hard to say the judging of scrapbook layouts won't be subjective which, of course, it will no matter how hard you try to say it won't.

This. SBG looks like some secondhand thrift store compared to other shops.

Anonymous said...

It has distressed brushes and a stamp, very shabby chic looking to me. What says "secondhand thrift store"?

Anonymous said...

157- who did the Philadelphia kit?

Anonymous said...

Judging is subjective, but it looks to me like Pixels has more than one judge, which I think makes it more fair.

I'd rather win being judged than win by "random" drawing. It means more.

Agreed.

You say shabby chic, I say secondhand thrift store. It's really not worth debating. I don't shop there except once in a blue moon for a couple designers I really like. I'd go more if the site was not ugly and tedious. It's a matter of taste and I don't like it there at all. Others agree. If you like it there, fine, go!

Judging is subjective
_____________

Of course, it is. No matter how hard "someone" tries to say it ain't so.

Anonymous said...

Not debating, just asking.

Anonymous said...

I'm not a fan of SBG either, sorry. What sites do you like?

I really like TLP after their redesign a few months ago. SSD gives me a sugar rush, and not in a good way. SO looks very juvenile, and I hate shopping there, but not just for that reason.

The one thing I like about gingerscraps is the size of the kits in the store. You can see the product without having to click on each one to see detail. You don't find them that big at many stores. I have to admit I don't shop there much, but I do like this feature. I wish I was more drawn to the forum there.

157 - They were all literally disgusting except amber shaw, sanko studios, and pixelscrapper. What a waste.

Anonymous said...

That blog train is pretty awful.

Anonymous said...

Apparently Trixie Scraps is literally giving people $2 on her FB page... Since she posted an image of actual US money.

Anonymous said...

You know it's pathetic when Digi Deb's part is one of the least awful. Yuck. AC action are very done. Some of those names have been around a long time too, Snack Pack Gu (wtf?), Outside The Box, Deb, Patty B, if you're not getting any better, it's time to give it up.

There's a template in there besides these three; it's okay.

I'm not even going to bother with the DST blog train anymore after this lame showing. I will just wait for the next digiscrap parade in a month and get my freebie fix then. The DST train is horrendous. It gets worse and worse each month.
