195 - You're entitled to your own definition of "well", but unless you're one of the top designers pulling in $3000+/month, I'd say there is room for improvement without any additional effort on your designing time.

I have seen plenty a designer be ripped apart when her CT layouts suck because her kits suck to begin with.
--
If the kits suck, so be it. However, other ct members scrapped with these same kits and their pages didn't look like someone "scrap-vomited" all over the page; their photos are also decent. I guess the designer should edit all the ct's photos to ensure they're presentable?

I'm a ctm for a few designers and for a site. At the site, we are assigned designers. Some of the kits the designers ask us to us aren't very good. I have to say, though, that most of the CTMs at this site do an excellent job with most of the kits, even if the kits aren't great. I've noticed that most of the time when a ctm does a bad job with a kit, it has been mostly because of the kit.

3- which designers make $3k/month??

Anonymous said...

5- you're assigned designers? Does it change each week?
How do they account for differences in productivity?

I'm a site ct for a top store and I can't imagine being assigned to 1 designer and having to scrap

I was at a store that assigned designers: you got 2 per month (so 2 weeks to work with their stuff. Some designers wanted you to work with ONLY their newest release...but they didn't release every week. That was annoying.). It sucked and I quit pretty soon after starting.

But I was also at a store that asked the CT to work with one designer for the month and ALSO work with whatever else in the store they wanted--so, as long as you make a lo with your assigned designer's stuff, then you basically have full store access. It works to help promote ALL designers (cuz some designers definitely get more store CT LOs than other designers), but it was also tough when you were assigned to a designer who didn't actually put out much stuff. I was assigned to a designer who hadn't released something in over 4 months. That was a toughie because I'd already worked with her most "recent" releases and the stuff I hadn't worked with didn't really suit me. But I made it work, cuz that's what a good lil' CTM does.

I think it's possible for a talented CT member to make even a crap kit look good. That's why CREATIVE is in the title. It can be a disappointment for the average scrapper/customer who doesn't have that ability and tries to scrap with crap!

7 - I imagine it rotates monthly. More than one store I've been in has assigned ctm's to specific designers for the month. That's not to say that's the only thing they can work with that month, but that they have to work with at least one product from their assigned designer.

From what I can tell, it's their way of trying to make sure everyone gets "equal" exposure and work from the ct. Not all that uncommon actually.

I thought every store did it that way. It's always been my experience, at least.

People often phrases suggestions as 'should.'

'You should try the new Starbucks frappuccino'
'We should go do the movies tonight'

So I think maybe you are over-reacting a bit to that word.

However, you are also naive if you think customers with negatives to say to you will contact you. Most won't, they will just stop being a customer.

Things can always be improved. Always. The 'if it ain't broke' argument is lame. Especially because you have no way of knowing if it's 'broke' without trying something new to see if your sales improve.

Dear SO,

Your Techno Geek FB hop could be fun. But after visiting three designer pages and having a new tab open up for each download, I gave up. Perhaps you've heard of direct downloads?

Sincerely,
An irritated customer

Anonymous said...

^^^ I thought the same thing. And then for a new window to open up with each step of the torch relay.

Kit wasn't that nice :(

Anonymous said...

I gave up on the Techno Geek hop for the same reasons - too many pages to jump through for a kit that is at most mediocre.

Anonymous said...

All those tabs are annoying and then if you visit the forums, the other half of the kit is only available if you are able to sit at your computer all day in their adobe chat room on Saturday. I really really hate that adobe chat thing. Even if I was able to be on the computer all day like that, I wouldn't want to listen them talking. Lame.

^^^that's exactly why I browse the store's gallery to search for "regular scrapper's LOs." I do NOT look at CT LOs for anything more than a closer look at the kit's contents. I don't look at CT LOs and think "Wow, I can totally make a LO like that cuz this kit is AWESOME!" It's like buying a diet soda cuz a size 2 model is advertising it and thinking "I'm gonna lose 30lbs by drinking this!" CT LOs are advertising, nothing more.

Anonymous said...

Well if you think you're going to lose weight by drinking any kind of soda, diet or not, you're an idiot.

Just be careful with your "regular scrappers" theory. It only goes so far. Some people just can't scrap a decent page even with a template and an amazing kit, so that's not always accurate either.

For me, I like to have a list of what's in the kit. The preview shows more to me than any layout because I can see if there are elements that I consider "must haves". Another reason why listing your items helps, because some elements may not be readily visible in your previews.

So why is DSA's shop not opening? I didn't apply, but was going to email Sara.

It's not for sure AND it's a pain in the butt to get the entire thing so I'm going to delete most of what I got off FB and forget about it.

Bored of the same old topic...here's another....
drum roll for designer of the year at My Memories..............................................................................................................................................not based on quality or sales, but based on the quantity of crap one puts in the store.....
the winner will be.....Touched by a Butterfly!!!
The so called 'designer' who gets all her elements straight from Shutterstock!! It's a joke to have her in the store!

Anonymous said...

Where did you see designer of the year?

Anonymous said...

Designer of the year? Where did you see that?

Anonymous said...

#21 - that's how MM works. It's all about quantity.

Anonymous said...

21, thanks for changing the subject, but who cares about MM? Who shops there? I've never heard of Touched by a Butterfly. I've looked at but never purchased from MM. I hate the store's set up.

The 'parade' is live ... it's a parade of boring ho-hum.

If that's the 'very best' our industry has to offer ... well, that's just depressing.

Anonymous said...

#26- I agree!

Anonymous said...

#25 You are right, who cares when there are designers like her at My Memories! Customers are forced to sift through her crap (and others) to find the quality stuff. That's why customers don't shop there!

Anonymous said...

Apparently lots of people shop there. I know several designers that sell there that get paid fairly well.

I think it's great! Sorry you're disappointed. Maybe you can find something to buy somewhere that you like.

Anonymous said...

The parade may be ho-hum, but it is already 1000x better than the old blog train crap had to offer!

Anonymous said...

I have the MyMemoriesSuite software & the only thing I've ever bought from the store was some of the album templates.
In case anyone isn't familiar with the software you can use digital kits that you buy elsewhere.

Anonymous said...

ITA 31. I can see myself actually using the kit I'd get when downloading this train.

Anonymous said...

After reading some of the comments here, I was all prepared to dislike the parade, but I'm pleasantly surprised. I think it's lovely! Thank you to contributing designers.

Admittedly 20x better than any other blog train I've seen out there. Still a little hit and miss for me. Didn't like that Wishing Well didn't have the correct link and was linked to her blog, had to sift through a post of ads to figure out I had to go to her fb page. Also didn't like having to go through a store purchase to get part of it.

Yeah, I know it's free, but still. I was actually really excited about the train, so was disappointed when there wasn't as much that I wanted to download as I expected.

Anonymous said...

I'm poster 34. The only thing I found annoying was for some of the designers I had to register and buy from their store. I didn't bother on some of those.

Anonymous said...

There doesn't seem to be anything on the River Rose Designs link??

Anonymous said...

What is 'lovely' about it? I'd like to like it but it's just ... blah. I think I have a couple dozen kits very similar to it.

Anonymous said...

There are other links that lead nowhere too!

Anonymous said...

I just got finished DL the blog train and Im very happy. It was handled well, I didn't have to register to DL anything, only 3 designers had issues with their links. I love the colour palette and I will be using this kit.
I for one was very vocal about hating the DSA blog train as being ugly, ill organized and to put it simple shit. Now they have an example of how to do right. Lets see if they up the ante or fold.

Anonymous said...

Just unzipped the blog train and StellaJan PLEASE learn how to package correctly. Put it in a folder! Now for taking a closer look.

It's a matter of taste just like anything else. I, for one, think it was very well done and I love the kit. Too bad you don't.
